Beginning in 1095 Pope Urban II had declared the holy war against the Saracens at The Council of Claremont, and immediately had thousands on his aid. Many people wanted to escape their everyday troubles, and seek adventure. They believed that if god wanted them to claim the holy land, they should. Others Sought treasures, and riches. The people of this time led very poor lifestyles, and had to live off of the land. The people struggled everyday to eat, and keep their families healthy. Once Pope Urban II Declared the Holy War, The people were without a doubt ready to assist him. The Pope had more than one initiative. He had also planned to expand Europe’s land, to help house the growing population of Europe. The main purpose of the Crusades was to reclaim the holy land from the Muslims.
